Buyer's Remorse

We have all been guilty at one time or another of making a bad purchase on a piece of clothing.  It could have been the crappy sales lady lying boldly to your face to make a sale,  a markdown on an item of clothing you just couldn't pass up because it was ONLY $__.99 (insert your price here), or a joyful purchase on your first item of clothing after having a baby because - well it fit!  Whatever your reasons, you are not alone.  Even I have made and will continue to make poor decisions on an item or items of clothing since I love a bargain too!

So how do you never buy the wrong thing again?  Never say never, but we can certainly limit our mistakes by asking ourselves a few simple questions before heading to the cashier and swiping our debit cards.

Q. Am I buying this only because it is on sale?
A: We all love a sale, but sometimes there is a reason it is on sale.  It could be the fit, the color, the fabric content.  Make sure you try the article of clothing on first before buying.  Some retailers have strict return policies on sale items so don't waste your money if you can help it.

Q: Is it versatile?  Will it go with other things already in my wardrobe?  Can I wear this with at least 2-3 outfits?
A:  It is certainly okay to have a signature "fancy" party piece for that one night of the year you get to cut loose, but other than that, make sure you can remix your new purchase with other things you already own.

Q: Does this fit MY lifestyle?  Do I have some place to wear this?
A: If your night out on the town is dinner and a movie with your husband, then buying a sequin pencil skirt and 4 inch heels are probably a bad decision.  If you are a stay-at-home mom, buying a suit is not the best investment either.

Q: Does this flatter MY figure
A: Try EVERYTHING on first before you make a purchase.
Just because something is "in style" does not mean it is right for you.  And just because it looks cute on the size 0 mannequin does not mean it is right for you.
ALSO
A: Do NOT buy something on sale in a smaller size with the intention of losing weight.  This is the worst thing you can do for your confidence.  Wait until you actually have hit your goal and reward yourself with something new then.

Q: Does the color highlight your complexion or make you look like death warmed over?
A: Retailers will shove a trendy color down your throat, but that doesn't mean you have to fall victim to a color that doesn't work for you.  Learn what looks good on you even if you have to drag your harshest critic along to tell you the truth.

Q: What upcoming events do I have that requires a new outfit?
A:  It is all in the planning, ladies.  If you know that your husband has a business dinner at an upscale restaurant in a few weeks, be sure to plan accordingly.  Knowing what you have in your closet can help you can shop in advance.  Waiting until the last minute will only result in poor purchases, over spending, and possibly a return trip to the store.

So is it okay to buy stuff on sale?  Of course!  Scouring the sale rack can be a fun challenge.  Finding that hidden treasure is like hitting the jackpot!  But before you bring something home, be sure to ask yourselves a few simple questions and avoid those fashion mishaps.

"The List" Part 4: The Dramatic Earring

Jewelry can be one of the biggest ways to make an impact on a basic outfit.  A basic white tee goes from gloomy to glamorous in an instant with a wow piece of jewelry.

Costume jewerly is an inexpensive way to be fashion forward on a budget.  You can wear it with several outfits in your closet, you don't have to skip lunch to fit into it, and you can wear it year after year as long as you buy a quality piece and take good care of it.

Tips for wearing dramatic earrings.

TIP 1
Don't go crazy with your jewels.  Let one piece be your statement whether it be a dramatic pair of earrings or a big statement necklace.

Tip 2
Costume jewelry for the most part is made with gold or silver plated metals.  If you have sensitive skin, be sure to ask an associate before making a purchase.  Gold prices are high right now so many manufacturers are having to use less expensive metals such as brass to keep the costs down.

Tip 3
Take a risk!  If you only wear silver, branch out and buy a great pair of gold earrings.  Be even more daring and buy a pair with bold colors.  It will add instant color to your face!

"The List" Part 3: Fancy Pants

I have to say it is a bit refreshing to see pants making a comeback after all of the shorty shorts and mini skirts that have been rearing their ugly heads the last few seasons.

REAL LIFE

A few tips for wearing "Fancy Pants":
TIP 1:  Don't pay attention to the number (size) on the label.
I have a love/hate relationship with pants.  There are one of the harder pieces of clothing to fit on a woman because more than likely they are too big in the waist and too tight in the thighs and rear.  My advice to all of you no matter if you are a size 2 or a size 12 is to buy a size bigger and take them to a tailor.  A good tailor will take them in at the waist and create the perfect pair of pants.

TIP 2: Avoid big prints and pastel colors if you are heavier on the bottom.
Not much to explain here.  Both can make the thinnest of our girlfriends look a little heavy.  Stay with darker colors for a slimmer look.

I think a different shoe would work better with these pants.  This is not my favorite look, but wanted to show you a printed pant.

TIP 3: Capri pants are not your friend.
Avoid any and all pants that cut off at mid calf.  They do nothing for your figure and will make you look short and dumpy.  Choose a pant that stops right at or slightly above your ankle bone.  This will give the illusion of longer (and leaner) legs.

TIP 4: Balance
If you love the wide leg trend, please balance it out with a more fitted top or jacket.  If skinny pants are your thing, choose a tunic style top (that accentuates your waistline) or a blouse that has a little more volume to it.

"The List" Part 2: PINKS

Ahhh - who doesn't love the color pink?  I never get sick of it - not even after having two girls.  The color pink looks good on just about every complexion.  And the beauty of this color trend is that it is not partial to just one shade.
